What is digital citizenship?

Screen time
Most parents worry about how much time their kids spend online. Research shows that over 50% of kids think they spend too much time online too! Digital citizens understand how to maintain a healthy balance with tech.
Reputation
A good online reputation helps kids get into college and land the jobs of their dreams! According to Kaplan Test Prep, more than two-thirds of colleges (68 percent) say it’s “fair game” to review an applicant’s digital reputation. Nearly one in ten colleges surveyed said they had revoked an incoming student’s offer based on something they found online. Good digital citizens know how to craft an awesome online reputation that can open doors to future opportunities.
Cyberbullying
An education in digital citizenship equips kids with the skills to deal with cyberbullying and digital drama. Research conducted by the Cyberbullying Research Center shows that, on average, about 28% of students say they have been the victim of cybebullying at some point in their lives. Even more will observe others being cyberbullied. A good digital citizen knows how to be an upstander to cyberbullying and what to do in the event they are the target of a bully.
Relationships
Maintaining healthy and positive relationships via all the ways they connect-- texting, social media apps, or when playing online games—is one of the most important capacities we must instill in young digital citizens. They should also know how to communicate appropriately and respectfully online, and to never engage in hate speech.
